Tom Cruise Turns Down Donald Trump’s Invitation

Donald Trump Takes the Helm at the Kennedy Center
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump assumed leadership of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, aiming to leave his mark on its events. He announced the honorees for the 48th Kennedy Center Honors, marking his first selections since taking charge.

Tom Cruise Declines Honor
Among the honorees, Tom Cruise reportedly declined the invitation. Sources say scheduling conflicts prevented the actor from attending. Cruise’s spokesperson declined further comment.

The annual ceremony, recognizing lifetime achievement in the arts, is set for December. Trump revealed the honorees during a visit to the Kennedy Center on August 13, 2025.

Star-Studded Lineup
This year’s list features a mix of Hollywood, Broadway, and music legends, including:

Sylvester Stallone

Disco icon Gloria Gaynor

Rock band KISS

Country star George Strait

Stage performer Michael Crawford

Trump, who appointed himself chairman of the arts complex in February, will also host the ceremony, a move expected to bring a unique tone to the event.

Cruise’s Schedule Conflict
Multiple current and former Kennedy Center employees confirmed that Cruise turned down the honor due to a packed calendar. Fresh off the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and several upcoming projects, the actor’s commitments may have made the December ceremony impossible.

Honorees React
While Cruise declined, other honorees expressed excitement. Gloria Gaynor, through representatives, said:

“I am beyond blessed and honored to be receiving this award. I hope in accepting it, I can continue the inspirational journey that began with I Will Survive.”

She added that the recognition reinforces her mission to inspire, empower, and unite people through music and art.

Trump praised the honorees, calling them “incredibly talented” and “an exceptional class”, singling out George Strait as “the king of country.”

Trump’s Role in Selection
When asked about selecting the honorees, Trump stated:

“I was about 98% involved… they all came through me.”

He also explained how he became host. Initially, he refused, citing his presidential duties. After encouragement from Susie Wiles, a newly appointed board member, he accepted the role.

Revitalizing the Kennedy Center
Trump is pushing to reshape the honors program, aiming for a glamorous, star-studded celebration. He praised the institution’s revival under his leadership:

“We’ve completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution.”

Sources indicate Trump remains committed to revitalizing the Kennedy Center, with discussions even hinting at a potential Trump–Kennedy Center name in the future.

The National Symphony Orchestra and Washington National Opera are collaborating with Trump’s team on business plans to boost endowments and ensure long-term sustainability.
