A devastating tragedy unfolded in Kerr County, Texas, over the July 4th weekend when rising floodwaters claimed the life of 21-year-old Joyce Badon and several others. Joyce, who had been staying at a riverside home with friends, sent a final message to her family just moments before disaster struck: “We’re being washed away.”
The area had been hit by intense storms the night before the holiday, causing the Guadalupe River to rise at an alarming rate. Within an hour, the water surged to dangerous levels, flooding homes, camps, and roadways across Central Texas.
Joyce was visiting a vacation home near the river with three friends: Ella Cahill, Reese Manchaca, and Aiden Heartfield. The property, like many others along the riverbank, was overwhelmed by fast-moving water during the early morning hours. Family members say it all happened so quickly that there was no time to reach safety.
Joyce’s parents, Ty and Kellye Badon, spoke to media outlets about the desperate hours after the flood. In a call placed by Aiden to his father, he was reportedly heard saying, “I have to go, I have to help Ella and Reese,” before the line went silent. Shortly after, the house was gone.
Kellye Badon took to social media to ask for prayers and share updates as rescue teams began their search. “They were hit by a flash flood,” she wrote. “Everything happened so fast.” Joyce’s message, sent in the final moments, became the last contact the family would have with her.
Volunteer groups and local authorities quickly organized extensive search efforts, using boats, drones, and trained teams to cover the affected area. Searchers reported finding debris from homes and vehicles scattered for miles. In one case, a body was discovered high in a tree, hidden from view except at the right angle, demonstrating the powerful force of the floodwaters.
Ty Badon, searching alongside volunteers, described the heartbreaking toll the disaster had taken. “It’s something you never expect to face,” he said. “But we’re grateful to everyone who came to help.”
On July 7, the Badon family received confirmation that Joyce’s body had been found. In a statement to NBC News, her father shared the family’s deep sorrow and appreciation for the outpouring of support. Later that day, Kellye posted a tribute on Facebook, writing: “This morning, God showed us the path. We found our beautiful daughter who blessed us for 21 years. We are still praying for her friends to be found. Thank you for the love and prayers.”
She also shared a photo of a rainbow that appeared over their home, calling it a peaceful reminder of Joyce’s presence.
Authorities have since confirmed that Reese Manchaca’s body was also recovered. As of now, Ella Cahill and Aiden Heartfield remain missing, and search efforts continue with the support of volunteers, rescue teams, and community members.
The loss of Joyce and others during the floods has become a symbol of the heartbreak experienced by many families in the region. Yet through their grief, the community has come together in extraordinary ways—offering prayers, resources, and unwavering support.
As recovery continues, those closest to Joyce remember her for her warmth, kindness, and the lasting impact she had on everyone who knew her.
