Heroic Rescue and Heartwarming Recovery: Abandoned Bulldog Finds Hope in Florida Heatwave

On a scorching day in Pompano, Florida, Officer Angela Laurella responded to a distressing call about two dogs left tied to poles on a deserted street. With the temperatures soaring past 100 degrees, time was of the essence.

When Officer Laurella arrived, she found one of the dogs, a frail gray bulldog, weakly tethered with barely any slack to move around.

“He was tied to a pole with a very short leash,” explained Amy Roman, president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, as reported by The Dodo. “He was emaciated, dehydrated, and all his bones and ribs were visible.”

The dog, whom the officer named Liam, reached out in trust, gently placing his paw in her hand—a silent plea for kindness. Roman described how Laurella approached Liam cautiously, extending her hand, to which he responded by cowering slightly but still offering his paw, seemingly asking for help.

Recognizing Liam’s troubled history and immediate need for care, Officer Laurella contacted Roman’s rescue organization. Despite the overwhelming number of animals already in their care, Roman agreed to take Liam under their wing.

Now cared for at Roman’s home, Liam is on his way to recovery. After several veterinary visits, the 17-pound bulldog is slowly building back his strength and is being fed more heartily than ever before. “He’s showered with affection,” Roman shared. “He’s fed hourly so his body can adjust… He’s thoroughly enjoying meals prepared by volunteers—boiled chicken and rice.”

Though Liam faces many vet visits and a long recovery, his joyful spirit shines bright. Roman expressed her admiration, saying, “He loves everyone and isn’t at all aggressive, despite what he’s endured. His gratitude and forgiveness are remarkable.”

Liam’s predicament is not unique in Florida, as more animals are abandoned or surrendered due to overwhelmed shelters. Roman urges pet owners to explore help from shelters and rescues before making the heart-wrenching decision to give up their pets. Liam is a reminder that every animal deserves a shot at a better life.

Even after his ordeal, Liam eagerly reaches out to people, hoping for a loving family to call his own. “I believe dogs like Liam have lessons for all of us,” Roman reflected. “His story renews your faith in second chances.”
