Democratic official announces from Mexico City: ‘I’m a Proud Guatemalan Before I’m an American’

Democrats Attend Controversial Summit in Mexico City
Over the weekend, several Democratic lawmakers traveled to Mexico City to participate in a summit that drew criticism for promoting anti-American rhetoric. The event featured strong rebukes of U.S. policies and global influence.

Ramirez Sparks Outrage with Identity Remarks
Illinois Representative Delia Ramirez delivered one of the summit’s most controversial statements, declaring, “I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American.”
Ramirez, who represents parts of Chicago and nearby suburbs, is the daughter of Guatemalan immigrants. She criticized the United States as “addicted to w*r” and driven by “imperialism, militarization, conquest, control, and competition.”

Personal Background Adds Fuel to Debate
According to her official biography, Ramirez is in a “mixed-status marriage,” as her husband lives in the U.S. without legal documentation. She identifies as the only member of Congress in such a relationship.

Summit Organized by Far-Left Groups
Progressive International, a far-left organization that describes capitalism as a “virus” needing “eradication,” co-hosted the event alongside Mexico’s ruling Morena party.
While the summit promoted values like “equality” and “solidarity” on its website, organizer David Adler admitted its true mission was to “confront” authoritarianism and “invert” global power—shifting influence from Washington to the Global South.

Israel-Hamas Conflict Takes Center Stage
Beyond immigration, the Israel-Hamas conflict dominated many discussions. Multiple speakers labeled the conflict as genocide.
Representative Ilhan Omar participated in a panel titled “Visions for the World,” where she voiced support for the Palestinian cause. Omar had been removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023 for a history of anti-Semitic remarks.

Tlaib Applauded as Symbol of Resistance
Fellow “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib received a standing ovation at the event. Colombia’s Deputy Minister Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir called her a “symbol of resistance” against fascism and praised her for advocating for Palestinians in the U.S.

Mexican Senate President Condemns U.S. Migrant Policies
Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Mexican Senate and member of Morena, condemned the U.S. for its treatment of migrants under the Trump administration.
He described detainment practices based on immigration status or ethnicity as “infamous and wrong.” Comparing detention centers to World W*r II-era facilities, he criticized what he saw as hypocrisy in U.S. drug enforcement, saying he had “not witnessed a single raid targeting drug dealers” conducted like immigration raids.

U.S. Immigration Enforcement Responds
In contrast, ICE has maintained that it targets individuals who vi*late both immigration laws and other criminal statutes. The agency emphasizes its focus on deporting those who pose public safety threats.
