President Trump honors Charlie Kirk with Presidential Medal of Freedom on his 32nd birthday
In a solemn Rose Garden ceremony on Tuesday, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded conservative activist Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom on what would have been his 32nd birthday. Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated on September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Calling Kirk a “martyr for truth and freedom,” Trump compared him to historic figures such as Socrates, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. “Those who change history the most have always risked their lives for causes they were put on Earth to defend,” the president said.
Trump returned to Washington from a diplomatic trip to Israel and Egypt just hours before the event. “I didn’t have the courage to call Erika and ask her to move it,” he said. “Today is Charlie’s birthday, and we’re here to honor him.”
A tribute to legacy and conviction
Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, accepted the Medal of Freedom on his behalf. Fighting back tears, she thanked Trump for what she called “the best birthday gift he could ever have.” She also read a short message from their three-year-old daughter, who had hoped to give her father a stuffed animal and a cupcake.
“Charlie lived only 31 short years on this side of heaven,” Erika said. “But he lived every single day with purpose and fought for truth when it was unpopular.” She added that he likely would have run for president one day “not out of ambition, but out of a servant’s heart.”
Trump’s remarks also addressed the broader political climate, condemning what he described as radical-left violence. The administration announced that visas were revoked for six foreign nationals who publicly mocked Kirk’s assassination. Argentine President Javier Milei, visiting the White House earlier in the day, stayed to attend the ceremony.
Kirk was the first recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom during Trump’s second term. The honor, established in 1963, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation. Kirk’s work with Turning Point USA helped shape a generation of young conservatives and played a significant role in Trump’s reelection.
“Charlie is looking down on us right now,” Trump said. “His name will be remembered among true American heroes.”
