Micheál Neeson was only 13 when he lost his star mother

In 1993, sparks flew on Broadway when Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson starred together in Anna Christie. At the time, Richardson was married, but her marriage ended soon after, and in 1994 she and Neeson wed. Their undeniable chemistry on stage carried into real life, and they went on to build a family together, welcoming two sons.

Their love grew stronger over the years, with Richardson once saying she understood why women were drawn to Neeson, because she knew firsthand what made him so special. Their joy expanded with the arrival of Micheál in 1995 and Daniel just 18 months later. For a time, the family flourished with love, laughter, and deep connection.

Tragedy struck in 2009 when Richardson suffered a head injury in a skiing accident. Though she initially seemed fine, her condition worsened, and doctors declared her brain dead. Neeson honored a promise the couple had made and made the heartbreaking decision to take her off life support, giving family and friends a chance to say goodbye.

Their eldest son, Micheál, went on to follow in his parents’ footsteps, building an acting career with roles in Anchorman 2, Vox Lux, and Made in Italy alongside his father. To honor his mother, he took her last name, becoming Micheál Richardson. For Neeson, his son’s decision was a moving tribute that carried Natasha’s memory forward—a legacy of love, strength, and family that lives on.
