Sally Field’s worst on-screen kiss in her decades-long career might be a surprise to most

Sally Field has long been admired as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and beloved actresses. At 76 years old, she continues to inspire fans with her talent, resilience, and honesty—both on and off screen.

Known for a career spanning decades, Field has portrayed a wide range of unforgettable characters. From her early days in Gidget and The Flying Nun to her iconic roles in Steel Magnolias, Mrs. Doubtfire, Forrest Gump, and Smokey and the Bandit, Field has consistently captivated audiences with her emotional depth and authenticity.

Her performance in Steel Magnolias, especially during the emotional funeral scene, remains one of her most powerful. In it, she masterfully conveyed the complex emotions of grief, love, and strength—showcasing the same talent that has earned her multiple awards, including two Academy Awards and three Emmys.

Raised in Pasadena, California, Field grew up in a show business family. Her early life, as detailed in her memoir In Pieces, included personal challenges, but she has emerged as a thoughtful and grounded figure in Hollywood. Through it all, she has remained both humble and resilient, continuing to engage with meaningful projects well into her 70s.

In recent years, she’s taken on standout roles in television, including the series Dispatches from Elsewhere in 2020 and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty in 2022, where she portrayed Jessie Buss.

And while she continues to impress with her acting, Field recently made headlines for a candid moment during a December appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. During a fan Q&A, she was asked about her least favorite on-screen kiss.

At first, Field hesitated. “Oh boy. Should I really name names?” she laughed. Host Andy Cohen encouraged her to share, and after a brief pause, Field gave an unexpected answer: Burt Reynolds.

The audience was surprised—Reynolds and Field dated for several years after co-starring in Smokey and the Bandit in 1977. Cohen asked, “But weren’t you two dating at the time?”

Field smiled and replied, “We were, but sometimes it just doesn’t work the way people think.” She added that their on-screen chemistry didn’t always reflect their off-screen relationship and that the experience wasn’t exactly what fans might imagine.

Field’s honesty has been a defining trait throughout her career. In previous interviews, she shared that although Reynolds later expressed regret about their relationship, she had not been in contact with him for decades before his passing in 2018.

In a March interview with Variety, Field explained that ending contact was necessary for her own well-being. “He was not someone I could be around,” she said. “He just wasn’t good for me. I needed space from that.”

Despite the complexities of the past, Field continues to look forward. She remains an enduring figure in the entertainment industry—one who isn’t afraid to speak her truth while continuing to create meaningful work.
